The Civil War Week by Week

Good day Readers!!

I welcome you to follow along with us in teaching

 The American Civil War

through the reading of this blog.

The American Civil War is a long and extensive unit that will take us quite a few weeks to complete.

However,
for those of you who follow this blog, I would love to share how
I am teaching this unit step by step, week by week, in hopes you get some interesting ideas to incorporate into your own homeschooling.

I have cited some of the general external resources we have used, as
well as, some of the free downloads you can get from this site.

Please note that this is just the way I taught it, you may wish
to include or leave
some information out according to your children's age.

Week One
Prep The Learner & Make a Visual Board

Today we start talking about Sectionalism.

Sectionalism was the reason why this war started so I thought it was important to start there.

Here is a helpful video to watch with your kids this week.

Sectionalism Interactive Notebook Pages

We will be reading or listening to Uncle Tom's Cabin as part of our reading list.

Here are some of the Video Resources we will be using in the next few weeks
to complete the understanding of this Unit.
You may have your kids browse through them if you wish.

Hands On Activity: Week One

I will start in the year 1820 and end in the year 1859 and create a visual with my learner.

You will need to print the link below, get some posted board to display during
your Civil War Unit Study.

Here is a picture of the visual board we created.

This visual board will help us remember important dates
and information as it is  a timeline of events.

Have learners repeat some of the dates out-loud and become familiar with
the names and order of events.

We will use the videos provided above to further get him prep for the Unit.
However, we will be digging with more hands on resources on Week Two.

Week Two
This week we will dig into each part of our visual poster.
Starting with
 The Missouri Compromise
The Compromise of 1850
We have also included the biography of Harriet Beecher Stowe.

I will be teaching each one of these sections with interactive note-booking pages.
We will also complete a lap book on Harriet Beecher Stowe's Life.

Our Title Page for this Lap Book.
The Inside of the Lap Book will summarize the life of this great abolitionist.

I like to also use our Reader on these three topics.
